[www.inewsguyana.com] – A 44-year-old Prison Officer attached to the Georgetown Prison was remanded after he was found trafficking narcotics and cigarettes into the prison.

Clayton Johnson denied both charges, one of which stated that on March 17 at Camp Street Prison, Georgetown, he had in his possession, 22 grammes of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

He is also accused of being in possession of 16 packets of cigarettes. On the day in question, the prison officers acting on information went to the office of the Arts and Craft officer, where a search was conducted on his person and it unveiled the marijuana hidden in his crutch. The cigarettes were found in his shoe.

Bail was objected to by the prosecution based on the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence. The objection was upheld by Magistrate Judy Latchman and Johnson will return to Court on April 07.
