Pregnant teen remanded on seven charges

ThompsonNineteen – year – old Onifa Thompson of John Fernandes Squatting area West Ruimveldt Georgetown appeared in court to answer seven charges namely threatening language, disorderly behaviour, two counts of resisting arrest and three counts of assault which she committed against three police officers.

Thompson, who appeared to be pregnant and in tears pleaded guilty with an explanation to all seven charges when they were read to her. The court heard that on August 22 at West Ruimveldt Georgetown she threatened Louvern Manifold.

It is alleged that on that same day Thompson resisted arrest from police constable Flaurence Dasil and police corporal Pamela Gordon. It is further alleged that on the said day the accused assaulted police constable Flaurence Dasil and Orin Halley and  police corporal Pamela Gordon after which she behaved disorderly at the Ruimveldt Police Station.

When Thompson was given the opportunity to speak she told the court that the ranks came to arrest her brother-in-law during which she tried to intervene. She said the ranks attacked her first and threatened to sit on her belly. Police prosecutor Seon Boswick objected to bail on the grounds that the accused will not return to court for trial. The Magistrate refused bail and Thompson will reappear in court on September 02. [Royan Abrams]
