garbage[www.inewsguyana.com] – The People’s Progressive Party has expressed concern over the state of the capital city, Georgetown.

According to the party’s newly elected General Secretary Clement Rohee, “it has become common place to see garbage at every corner and in every drain.”

He says what is more alarming is the vandalism of garbage bins by citizens and the refusal to place garbage in this receptacles but rather next to it.

“This habitual practice has to change… it must start with the citizens.” Rohee added.

He opined that this form of indiscriminate dumping is the reason for several floods and its after effects on the health of the nation. The PPP General Secretary has called for citizens to come on board and aid in stamping out this culture.

Additionally, Rohee says the party is disappointed with the laissez-faire approach of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) in this regard, adding that the Mayor Hamilton Greene along with his PNC backing is a disgraceful failure.

“One could only imagine what it would have been if government did not invest hundreds of millions of dollars every year…and Green still has the audacity to accuse government of not assisting” Rohee added.

He called on the Mayor to reveal how the revenue of the council is being spent, while pointing out the significant amount of money that is spent monthly on wages with little work being done.

Rohee says nonetheless the PPP will continue to engage all stakeholders who have an interest in improving the city.
