President Dr Irfaan Ali has hinted that his government will distribute another cash grant to citizens in time for Christmas – if re-elected at the polls on September 1.
“PM you told them next year is the next [cash] grant…if they behave theyself, they get it this year,” President Ali remarked whilst addressing a large gathering of supporters at the public meeting hosted by the Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) at Eccles, East Bank Demerara on Tuesday night.
“We will have a beautiful Christmas!” President Ali expressed. “Look at the smile on my face and know you will have an enjoyable holiday season!”
Approximately 600,000 Guyanese aged 18 and above were eligible for the initiative when it was first introduced in October 2024. During the initial rollout, 629,498 beneficiaries received the grant, which amounted to $100,000.
In addition to this cash grant, the PPP/C administration has introduced a number of initiatives aimed at alleviating financial burdens on citizens. These include the $100,000 cash grant for newborns, various health vouchers to offset costs associated with medical expenses, and the “Because We Care” cash grant for school children which will be increased to $200,000 in the next term (including a $100,000 transportation grant).
Pensioners and persons who benefit from can also look forward to increased benefits as the PPP/C intends to raise old age pension to $60,000 and to ensure each senior citizen benefits from a $50,000 transportation grant while the public assistance grant will move to $40,000.
These three measures alone will be putting back into the pockets of citizens more than $60 billion of additional disposable income.
The PPP/C has repeatedly highlighted that its plans for citizens extend beyond financial support and includes investments in housing, infrastructure, recreational facilities, and youth development.
