As the countdown begins for the arrival of Local Government Elections (LGE) in Guyana the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) will be presenting its lists to the Offices of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Returning Officers tomorrow on Nomination Day.

The Party, in being consistent with its pledge to contest the March 18, 2016 LGE, will be handing over 70 lists to contest over 500 Constituencies and nine Municipalities.

cupAccording to the PPP, it will be contesting the long awaited LGE as the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) with the Cup being its Symbol.

At a media briefing today it stated that it is “pleased to announce that it has struck the 50-50 balance between PPP and Civic candidates” who will be contesting 70 of the 71 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs).

The Party was able to garner candidates and backers in 580 Constituencies and nine Municipalities save for the Local Authority Area (LAA) of Mocha/Arcadia, East Bank Demerara where following the promotion of a “fear and divisive campaign mounted by the APNU+AFC”, the PPP/C regrettably, was unable to field a Candidate, the PPP declared.

“The PPP/C wishes to make it clear that its decision to contest these elections is premised on the confidence and optimism the Party has in the electorate’s ability to make the right choices, as well as their determination to prove to country and the world at large that, notwithstanding the challenges and obstacles it continues to face with GECOM’s electoral machinery, the biased nature of its electoral officials and the Chairman and the Chief Election Officer, the PPP/C is the people’s choice to take Guyana forward,” the Party further declared.
