Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal accident on the Kuru Kururu Public Road, Soesdyke/Linden Highway in the vicinity of Hill Foot, on Tuesday night which resulted in a 46-year-old porter being killed.

Dead is Dexter Conway of Old Road, Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara.

Based on information received, the accident occurred at around 23:05hrs.

According to reports received, motor lorry GVV 427 with a trailer, TVV87 –driven by Samuel Jaisingh of Sarah Johanna – was proceeding east along the northern side of the said road when Jaisingh stopped because of a mechanical breakdown.

Conway who was a porter and an occupant of the vehicle came out with Jaisingh and were  making  checks to the right side middle of the lorry, next to the diesel tank.

However, at that time motorcar PRR 378-  driven by a 28-year-old male of Kuru Kururu Village,  Linden Highway-  was proceeding in the said direction.

INews was told that as the driver began to overtake the lorry, his vision was  blinded by the lights of  another vehicle in the opposite direction and before he could completely overtake the lorry,  he felt an impact to the left side of his vehicle.

Upon stopping his car and making an inspection, the man explained that he observed an injured Conway lying on the roadway, motionless, while Jaisingh was sitting up on the road.

The car driver said that he picked up the unconscious Conway –because he appeared to be severely injured- and rushed him to the Diamond Diagnostic Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Jaisingh was subsequently treated and discharged.

A breathalyser test was conducted on the 28-year-old driver and no trace of alcohol was found on his breath, police say. (Ramona Luthi)
