Politicians should not be making decisions for the students and faculty of the University of Guyana (UG) and should not be allowed to sit on the University’s Council.

This is the view of Attorney – at – Law and Parliamentarian of the main opposition – A Partnership for National Unity – James Bond.

Bond was at the time addressing the students at UG yesterday, Tuesday August 27. Bond believes that the policies under which the University operates are archaic.

“You cannot have a council in which politicians make your decisions on a day to day basis. The systems we have are not suitable for the proper and effective functioning of this institution,” Bond said.

He believes that the University continues to be politicized in every way possible.

He urged the students to mount “serious pressure” on the powers that be, inclusive of the main opposition – A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) to “get their acts together and make UG work.”

In this regard, Bond encouraged the students to launch protest actions whenever it is necessary so that their many issues can be addressed.

Additionally, the Parliamentarian also noted that the government does not seem willing to invest in UG.

“You cannot be expected to mould a country in where the institution that is expected to mould you is bogged down with financial difficulties, bogged down with administrative difficulties. I want to tell you this, were we to continue on this trajectory, we will arrive DOA (Dead on Arrival).

Bond noted that the University is in a state of emergency.
