The traffic department of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) has recorded a total of 59 road deaths from 56 fatal accidents for the year thus far.

This is according to Police Commissioner [ag] Leroy Brumell, during a press conference today. He said this is in comparison to 43 fatal accidents with 45 deaths during the same time last year.

Brumell also noted that this is a 31% increase in road deaths.

He told reporters, “This is also of concern to us and we have increased our traffic presence on the roads as well as enhancing our traffic education via the media, schools and other initiatives.”

He explained that the GPF recently launched ‘Operation Road Order’ which focuses specifically on speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol. According to Brumell, these are the main causes of fatal accidents in Guyana.
