One year jail for man who stole pig

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Calvin Francis of Princes Street, Lodge Georgetown was on Tuesday (March 4) sentenced to one year in prison by Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond on a simple larceny charge.
The a repeat offender made his second Court appearance on Tuesday after first being refused bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on February 17, where he pleaded not guilty to the offence.

DSC06193At Tuesday’s Court hearing Francis accepted the allegation which detailed that on Monday, February 10 at Princes Street he stole one pig valued $65,000, property of Jean Bacchus.
Police Prosecutor Michael Grant on Francis’ first appearance had told the Court that the virtual complainant fed the animal around 13:30hrs on the day in question but when she returned around 16:20hrs, she discovered the pig was missing.
The Prosecutor said Bacchus made a report to the Police and an investigation was carried out, which revealed that persons saw the defendant in the pig pen.
Francis had declared then that he did not steal the pig but saw it lying on the road after being struck down by a truck.
The defendant confessed however on Tuesday that he stole the pig and sold it at Bourda Market.
