North West man sentenced to two years jail for beating girlfriend with wood

DSC05146Thirty – eight – year old Oswald Evans of North West District appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry charged for inflicting grievous bodily harm. Evans pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced to two years in jail by the Magistrate.

The court was told that on August 18 at North West District he inflicted grievous bodily harm to Shantie Carter and as a result she sustained a fractured hand.

According to police prosecutor Bharrat Mangru, on the day in question the complainant was at their camp cooking when the accused came home and checked her phone.

The court heard that the man observed several calls from an unknown number. The prosecutor said the accused questioned the woman about the calls and was not satisfied after which he left and went to a shop to consume alcohol.

Upon his return, he took the complainant for a walk, during which he armed himself with a piece of wood and dealt the woman several lashes about her body.

Before sentencing, the Magistrate took into consideration the aggravating factors, previous convictions, injuries sustained by the complainant, prevalence and seriousness of the offence.[Royan Abrams]
