As part of the day’s agenda, Professor Griffith will outline his vision for growth and development at UG though a presentation on ‘Dreaming and Doing Opportunities and Innovation at UG’.  This conversation with the university’s most important constituents will center around three main questions:

  • What challenges are we facing at our UG?
  • What should be UG’s role in the context of Guyana’s socio-economic and political landscape?
  • How can we help fix things at UG to enable it to play its rightful role in the nation and beyond?

Among the ideas and approaches to be discussed are energising and galvanising of all stakeholders.  When reached for comment, Prof. Griffith said, “I am reminded of one of Leonardo da Vinci’s quote: Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do.” This quote is most apropos as we reflect on the 50 th anniversary of our great nation’s independence from colonial powers as well as the 50th anniversary of UG’s first Convocation.

The May 22 Meet and Greet, hosted by UG, will be the first of several similarly planned engagements between the Vice-Chancellor and the community. Another is planned for June 5 at York College, NY.

Professor Griffith comes to the University of Guyana after having served as the Executive-in-Residence of The University at Albany, State University of New York. In addition, this distinguished son of Guyana has held a number of other leadership positions including President of Fort Valley State University in Georgia (2013-2015), Provost and Senior Vice President at York College in New York (2007-2013), Provost at Radford University in Virginia (2006-2007), Dean of the Honors College at Florida International University (2001-2006), and Budget Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Florida International University (1998-2001), all while maintaining his tenure as a political science professor.

To register for the Meet and Greet, the University administration is advising persons to  visit www.meet-the-vc.eventbrite.com or telephone (592) 222-5402.  Seats are limited and will be issued on a first come first served basis, UG’s Public Relations Division said in a statement.
