Mother remanded for allegedly choking 8-year-old son to death

Twenty-eight-year-old Sonia King of Lot 565 Parfait Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, was on Friday charged for the murder of her eight-year-old son, Emmanuel King when she made an appearance at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.

The charges were laid immediately after the post-mortem examination (PME) proved the child was manually strangled to death. The PME was performed by Government Pathologist, Dr Nehaul Singh at the Ezikeiel Funeral Home, and gave the cause of death as strangulation.

It was reported that the woman initially claimed that the child fell from a guava tree during the afternoon of February 21 after which he retired to bed. At about 22:00h, the mother went to check on the child but found him in a motionless state.

He was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. She later confessed that due to frustration, she reportedly took a bed sheet and choked the child to death while he was sleeping.

After the incident, she reportedly confessed to her husband to killing the child. She was arrested subsequently confessed to investigators.

She was remanded to prison and will make another court appearance on March 21.
