Mother of five remanded to prison for cocaine in Achar

[www.inewsguyana.com]Thirty – Eight – year old Sadika Leona Odie of Thomas Street, Kitty, Georgetown and a model of Burrowes School of Arts, was refused bail today on a drug trafficking charge, by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

She pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on Saturday, February 8 at Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, she had 9.274 kilogrammes of cocaine in her possession.

Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor, Oswald Massiah said that the woman made arrangements with someone in Guyana to take two packages concealed with what appeared to be seed mixed in Achar to the United States and was offered a fee of $US10,000 and was also granted $US4,000 in advance with an airline ticket.

She had a suitcase and a bag and was asked to disembark the aircraft to identify her bag and search yielded the amount mentioned in the charge.

Attorney – at – Law Paul Fung – A – Fat represented the defendant and told the Court that on the day in question, his client had her seven – year – old child on board. He said she is a mother of five children.

The case was transferred to Providence Magistrate’s Court for February 14.
