[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Guyana Police Force has sought to explain its arrest of the Toshao of Moco Moco Village, Mark George who had prevented President Donald Ramotar from entering the village earlier in the week.

The Police in a statement on Friday evening noted that George was arrested after an allegation of him raping a 13 – year – old student of the Moco Moco Primary School, Rupununi and there were attempts to cover up the incident by village members.

As a matter of fact, the allegation was made the same day [February 17] that the Toshao prevented the President from entering the village due to short notice.

According to the police, “The report of the incident which is alleged to have occurred on February 01, 2015, was made to the police at Lethem on February 17, 2015, by the Regional Schools Welfare Officer based on information obtained.”

The Police Force noted “It is believed that there was some attempt to cover up the matter initially by members of the village because of who is the suspect in the matter.”

The statement explained that the police were earlier unsuccessful in contacting the victim and were only able to do so on Friday February 20. The Toshao had explained to members of the media that he was fearful of backlash from the PPP government for refusing the President’s entry into the village.

He had explained that the President’s representative gave the village less than a day’s notice of his visit, when the Amerindian Act clearly stipulates that one week’s notice should be given.
