Mining week to focus on promoting green, responsible mining sector

The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment along with the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission [GGMC] will host the 10th Biennial Mining week under the theme “Green, Clean and Responsible; Securing the future of mining.”

The activities will commence with a walk on August 25 in Georgetown and will culminate with Pork Knocker’s day on August 31 at Golden Beach Bartica.

At a press conference this morning [Wednesday August 21], Assistant Commissioner Retired of the GGMC, Newell Dennison said mining week will be used as a platform to raise awareness on the things that occur in this sector.

In addition, focus will also be placed on the importance of mining and the effects on society and the lives of people.

Senior Policy Analyst and Advisor at the Ministry, Bobby Gossai explained that in line with this year’s theme, most of the activities will focus on promoting a green, clean and responsible mining sector while securing the future of the industry.

On Monday August 26 and Tuesday August 27, the National Mining and Quarrying conference will be held at the Guyana International Conference (GICC) along with an exhibition.

Education sessions will also be conducted on Wednesday August 28. [Akash Ramlackhan]
