Miner killed after attacking businessman with cutlass

A miner was on Thursday last shot and killed after he allegedly attacked a businessman with a cutlass at a Mining Camp in the Cuyuni River. The dead man has only been identified as Leon.

Based on reports received, on the day in question, the businessman visited a shop owned by a Brazilian National but was forced to stay at that location since a fallen tree had blocked the road thus preventing him to return to his camp loacted at 1 ½ mile Bartica, Potaro.

The businessman reportedly tied a hammock in the Brazilian camp and was relaxing when he heard loud noises emanating from outside. As a result, the Brazilian National went to check and saw the now dead man hitting a cutlass to the walls of the mining camp.

The Brazilian National attempted to take away the cutlass from the man but instead, he was overpowered and it was this time, the man attacked the businessman.

The businessman who is a licensed firearm holder, drew his weapon and reportedly discharged a round in the air to scare Leon but the man continued making advances at him.

As such, the businessman discharged three rounds, two of which struck the now dead man.

The Police were called to the scene and Leon was pronounced dead. The businessman was taken into Police custody and his weapon has since been lodged.

He is assisting with the investigations.
