Miner gets two years jail for gun, ammo possession

A miner was on Tuesday found guilty and sentenced to 2 years imprisonment along with a $50,000. fine after he appeared before Magistrate Annette Singh at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court

Godfrey Williams of lot 3744 Stevedore Housing Scheme and Lot 1666 Diamond Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara was facing charges which stated that in February of 2014 at Light Street Georgetown, he was found to be in possession of guns and ammunitions.

The case which was presented by prosecuting Officer James Bond states that on the day in question information was received by the police that a white Tundra was seen lurking on Light Street.

Police ranks then responded to the information received and found Williams in the Tundra on the said street.

He was asked by the police officers to provide his license to which he stated that he did not have it on his person.

A search was then conducted and it was discovered that Williams was in possession of guns and ammunition to which he did not have a license for.

He was subsequently arrested and charged for the offense.

When given the opportunity to speak to the court before his sentencing, Williams explained that he has a business and is the sole provider for his family. He expressed that if he was to go to jail his business would suffer.
