Meten – Meer – Zorg Invasion: Two gunmen in custody, one on the run; Police seize gun, ammo

[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Guyana Police Force has confirmed that one man was shot dead, while two others are in police custody and another on the run after they invaded the Kastev Housing Scheme, Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, this morning, September 16, with the intention to commit a robbery.

Police have identified the dead man as Kirk Bacchus, of Paradise, East Coast Demerara.

According to the police, ranks acted on information received which indicated that an armed robbery was planned and staked out an area at Kastev Housing Scheme, Meten-Meer-Zorg, WCD.

The police related that at about 10:00 hours, two motor vehicles, bearing number plates HB 7644 and PPP 9366, drove up and four men, two of whom were armed with handguns exited the vehicles.

Police ranks said they challenged the men who responded by opening fire on them resulting in the fatal wounding of Bacchus. iNews was however informed that one of the men in custody has also been injured.

The police is said to have used the car of Gurdyal Persaud, a taxi driver from Top Class taxi service to give chase after the bandits. Persaud said he was leaving the taxi base when two police officers jumped in his car and asked him to drive behind the gunmen during which shots were fired. He however escaped without any injuries.

Residents, some of whom had locked themselves in their houses as the incident unfolded, told iNews that the dead gunman posed at a Guyana Power and Light employee and is believed to have been shot two times in the region of the chest.

Police said a 9mm. pistol with two live rounds was recovered while the fourth man who is yet to be apprehended is armed with the other firearm. The motor vehicles were seized by the police.
