Man remanded for beating pregnant wife who refuses to give evidence against him

The 32- year – old defendant, Renshan Monroe pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that said on Tuesday, December 31, he unlawfully assaulted Natoya Hinds.

The Virtual Complainant (VC) stood restlessly before the Court and placed her hands on her abdomen and lower back as she told Magistrate McGusty, she does not wish to proceed with the matter.

Monroe, the Court heard was charged on several occasions for similar offenses and the victim is always in the habit of offering no evidence against him. Police Prosecutor, Seon Blackman opposed bail based on this fact. He said this situation could have been more serious and warned of it occurring in the future, since it is an ongoing issue between both parties.

Blackman said on the day in question, they couple had an argument over a cellular phone and after the accused became annoyed, he dealt the pregnant woman a cuff to her abdomen.

The Prosecutor cited the nature of the offence and the penalty attached and noted that the victim’s condition is critical. Meanwhile, the accused told the Court that as a result of the previous matters, he was recommended to seek counseling. He added that he is presently unemployed but will commence work at Gold Mine on Monday.

The victim informed the Magistrate that she does not wish to proceed with the matter because she depends on Monroe to support her.

However, he was remanded to prison and will make his next court appearance on January 6 before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
