The charred remains of an elderly man were on Sunday afternoon removed by undertakers following a devastating fire which completed gutted his  Better Hope, East Coast Demerara home.

The man, who shared the flat wooden house with his 54-year-old wife was seen consuming alcohol earlier in the day.

The <<Inews>> understands that about 12:00h, an alarm was raised by the residents that the couple’s house was on fire.

Although neighbours formed a bucket brigade to put out the blaze, they were forced to retreat due to the intense heat. Within 15 minutes the wooden structure had turned to rubble.

However, as the house continued to burn no one knew that the man was in the house. After the fire was extinguished, the gruesome discovery was made. His badly burnt body was found in lying position.

At no point in time, did anyone hear any screams emanating from the house and as such, it is believed that the man might have slept away on the floor of the house.

His remains were taken to the Lyken’s Funeral Home awaiting a post mortem.
