Man in Rupert Craig Highway accident granted bail

DSC05344www.inewsguyana.com] – Twenty Two – year – old Dev Harkisun of Pump Station Street, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara appeared today, October 22 in the Georgetown Magistrates Court before Magistrate Judy Latchman to answer to a charge of causing death by dangerous driving, to which he pleaded not guilty.

It is alleged that on October 19 on the Rupert Craig Highway he drove motor lorry GRR 5801 in a dangerous manner killing 77 – year – old Motorcyclist Stanley Roach of Evans Street, Charlestown, Georgetown.

Attorney-at-law Sase Gunraj who represented the accused told the court while making an application for reasonable bail for his client, that the accused is gainfully employed as a truck driver and was never involved with the law.

However, Police Prosecutor Ramsahoye Rambajue informed the court that on the day in question at about 11:20hrs, Harkisun drove and parked his vehicle along the Rupert Craig Highway and went to conduct business at the Mekdeci office. According to the prosecutor the accused returned, entered the lorry and began reversing when the rear of the vehicle collided with Roach and subsequently ran over him.

The crushed Roach was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
