A 60-year-old man is now is police custody following an incident in their Bouganvillea Park, East Bank Demerara home which resulted in him “accidentally shooting” his 50-year-old wife to her stomach during the wee hours of Monday morning.
This is according to Police Public Relations Officer, Jairam Ramlakhan on Monday.
Based on information received, the couple reportedly returned home from a late night outing at around 02:00hrs. The middle aged woman went into the shower, while her husband, who is a licenced firearm holder, went into the bedroom and began to “clear his weapon.”
The man’s wife came out of the shower and walked into the bedroom when he reportedly pulled the trigger, being unaware that a round was still stuck in the gun’s chamber.
The shot hit the woman in her stomach, and she began to bleed profusely. Her frantic husband reportedly contacted the police and medical officials were called.
The injured 50-year-old woman was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she underwent surgery and is said to be in a stable condition.
Her husband is presently in police custody assisting with investigations.(Ramona Luthi)
