[www.inewsguyana.com] – Storm Gouveia was charged with two drug related offences and was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Wednesday, April 23.

The unrepresented defendant pleaded guilty to the first charge, which noted that on April 21 at Norton Street, Georgetown, he had in his possession 3 ¼ grammes of Marijuana.

However, Gouveia pleaded not guilty to the second charge which alleged that on the same day at Norton Street, he had 1 ½ grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

Police Prosecutor Michael Grant told the Court that on the day in question, Police were on patrol on Norton Street, when they saw the defendant standing in a corner and acting in a suspicious manner. After he noticed the ranks, Gouveia ran into a yard and was caught with a black plastic bag containing the illegal substances.

For the marijuana charge, he was fined $3,000, along with six months community service to be performed at the Georgetown Prison.

As it relates to the cocaine charge, he was denied bail since no special reason was given to the Court. The case was transferred before Magistrate Fabayo Azore for commencement of trial on May 8.
