Man accused of several robbery under arms charges further remanded

Shamar Charles on Friday reappeared before a city magistrate to answer to four robbery under arms charges and was further remanded.

The first charge alleged that on July 27, 2018, while in the vicinity of Houston, East Bank Demerara (EBD), while being in the company of others, and while being armed with a gun, he robbed Devindra Persaud of one Samsung cellphone valued at $120,000, and of $50,000 in cash.

Charles denied the allegation when it was read to him by Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore, but was remanded to prison.

He also appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on three robbery-under-arms charges, all of which he denied.

One of those charges read that on July 25, 2018, while in the vicinity of Bagotstown, EBD, and while being armed with a gun, he robbed Debby Atwell of a quantity of jewellery valued at $230,000.

Another charge alleged that on July 24, 2018, at Eccles, EBD, while being in the company of others, and while being armed with a gun, he robbed Ellis Valenzuela of a cellphone valued at $14,000.

The last charge alleged that on that same day and in the vicinity of Eccles, while being in the company of others and while being armed with a gun, Charles robbed Weifins Wong of a quantity of jewellery, cash and a cellphone, all valued at $2.6 million.

The matter will continue on October 1.
