Twenty-two-year-old Shelton George of Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, who was on remand for the murder of D’Urban Street Chinese Restaurant waitress, Debra Blackman back in August 2014, was earlier today (Tuesday), found motionless in one of the cells at the Lusignan Prison.

Upon the discovery, the man was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival at around 06:00hrs.

When contacted, Director of Prisons, Gladwin Samuels told INews that the man was seen in good spirits on Monday evening, while noting that although the young man was in a wheel chair, he did a lot for himself.

The circumstances surrounding the death of the prisoner on remand are yet to be determined as a post-mortem examination is scheduled to be performed on Wednesday. Samuels noted that the immediate relatives of the dead prisoner were contacted.

Back in 2014, after he was caught on-camera shooting Blackman while she was on duty, George had fled the country. He was later shot in Suriname by a Guyanese businessman. As a result of that incident, he had been rendered paralyzed in his legs.

Earlier this year, police received information that George was residing in his mother’s Better Hope home, and as such, he was apprehended.

In addition to the Blackman murder charge, George was charged for the attempted murder of former Magistrate Fazil Azeez. (Ramona Luthi)
