Asgar Ally of Bella Dam, West Bank Demerara was on Tuesday remanded to prison when he appeared in court to answer to a charge alleging that he murdered his elder brother on July 5, 2018 over a box of food.

His matter was adjourned until August 13, 2018.

This publication had reported that on Thursday last, at about 18:30hrs, Ally- who is an employee of Puran’s Disposal Service- reportedly sent his 61-year-old brother, Nazir Khan of  Bella Dam, West Bank Demerara, to purchase a box of food for him at a nearby shop.

However, after some time had elapsed and Khan had not returned with the food, Ally went in search of him in the company of a friend.

Upon locating Khan, the elderly man admitted that he had eaten the food since he was hungry.

The suspect became enraged, and he along with his friend, began to beat Khan about his body.

In a bid to escape, the elderly man reportedly ran into a neighbour’s yard but he was chased out based on the fact that the neighbor did not want to interfere in the family’s affairs.

As such, Khan  sought refuge at the home of 74-year-old man who resided nearby, informing him that he just wanted to lie down.

However, after two hours, the pensioner went to check on Khan, only to find him in a motionless state.

As such, an ambulance was summoned and Khan was transported to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Ally was immediately arrested, and his friend who allegedly assisted in the beating, is being hunted. (Ramona Luthi)
