Mabaruma man remanded to prison over narcotics possession

A Mabaruma, Region One resident was made to stand before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts earlier today (Wednesday) to answer to a charge of possession of narcotics.

Derick Persaud, 36, of Brooms Estate, Mabaruma denied the charge, which stated that he on July 29 at Aruka River, North West District, had in his possession 65 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

On the day of the incident at about 09:15h, the Police were on river patrol at the Aruka River, Mabaruma when they intercepted a metal boat containing 22 drums of fuel and three empty drums containing food items which were enrouted to the Arakaka Mining District.

A search was conducted on Persaud and two transparent Ziploc bags and a small black plastic bag with a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis was found.

Persaud was taken to the Mabaruma Police Station where the suspected cannabis was weighed and amounted to the above mentioned grams. He was remanded to prison and is expected to make his next appearance at the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court on August 22.
