Labourer slapped with rape charge

David Europe, a 24-year-old labourer was on Friday granted bail in the sum of $170,000 when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates Court to answer to a rape charge.

The accused, who was unrepresented, was not allowed to plead to the indictable charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan.

The court heard that on January 22, 2018, Europe forced himself onto a 13-year-old girl. The incident reportedly occurred at the teen’s home in Craig on the East Bank of Demerara.

The teen allegedly walked into her room to find the accused on her bed, after which he forcibly held her down and raped her. The matter was adjourned until July 18.
