Labourer claims he was stifled with ‘black bag’ by Police; refused bail on theft charges

[www.inewsguyana.com] – A 25-year-old Labourer of 14 Success Village, West Bank Demerara was today (Friday, September 05), refused bail by Magistrate Judy Latchman on a simple larceny charge.

Lalchand Ramcharran pleaded not guilty to the charge which claimed that between August 30 and 31 at Ameila’s Ward, McKenzie Linden, he stole one electrical drill and one electrical saw together valued $118,000, property of Glory Chitram.

The unrepresented man complained that the Police stood on his handcuff and placed a black plastic bag over his face, stifling him.  

Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt opposed bail by citing the nature and prevalence of the charge and the fact that he is living in the West Magisterial District he may posed a flight risk.

The father of three with no prior convictions or pending matter was remanded to prison and the case will call again on September 9 before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
