A search has been launched for the body of a 35-year-old Region One resident who is suspected to have drowned in the Waini River on Tuesday afternoon.
The man has been identified as Oswyn Gaye, known as “Red Man” of Kumaka, Region One.
While details remain sketchy, INews was told that Gaye was allegedly traveling in a boat on the Waini River at about 15:30h, when he reportedly fell out.
Eyewitnesses have reported to police that the man was seen struggling for just a few seconds before he went under and did not resurface. Gaye’s relatives have confirmed that he cannot swim.
Investigations are ongoing.
