The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) wishes to address the misinformation currently circulating on social media regarding an electrical incident that occurred last night, Thursday, November 13 at GuyExpo.

At approximately 18:00hrs, the power supply was interrupted to approximately fifteen (15) booths located on the tarmac of the Exhibition Centre.

GPL’s technical team responded immediately and discovered that the 50 KVA transformer serving the area was burnt.

Our technical team on site concluded that the transformer failed due to overloading. A replacement transformer rated at 100KVA was promptly installed. However, upon connection to the circuit, that transformer also sustained damage.

Further inspections were conducted, and it was determined that the root cause of the issue was an internal electrical fault on the exhibition centre’s internal network.

To resolve the situation, the team isolated a section of the internal network and installed a new 75 kVA transformer.

At approximately 20:15hrs, power was restored to the affected booths.

GPL assures the public that the incident was due to a surge in load demand and an electrical fault on the internal network, and not a failure of the wider GPL network.

A team will return to the Exhibition Centre today to conduct further checks and troubleshooting to prevent a recurrence of last night’s incident.
