The Success Housing Scheme on the East Coast of Demerara continues to advance, delivering house lots and new homes for the benefit of hundreds of Guyanese families.
Minister of Housing, Collin Croal, recently conducted a site visit to the development, accompanied by engineers from the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), to assess ongoing works and address matters raised with the Ministry.
The Success Housing Scheme comprises over 700 allocated house lots. First-phase infrastructure works have already been completed, including roads and drainage networks.
Electrical and pipe networks are also in place within the scheme, while testing of the water supply connection is currently ongoing to ensure there are no leakages or technical issues.
In addition to land development, 130 houses are currently under construction at the site.
While several homes have already reached the completion stage with some beneficiaries living in their homes, the Ministry has noted delays affecting some units and will be engaging the contractor on this issue.
To date, the Government has invested approximately $2.1 billion at the section the houses are being built.
The Minister emphasised the importance of housing as a critical component in improving the lives of citizens and ensuring long-term stability for families. Looking ahead, Minister Croal outlined the Government’s expanded housing agenda and targets for the year.
“This year alone we intend to construct 8,000 houses … as part of our commitment to the 40,000 houses programme over these five years.”
He further highlighted a noticeable shift in public demand toward completed housing units rather than land-only allocations.
“We’re seeing more persons asking for houses rather than the land, and as a government we are responding to that demand.”
To meet this growing need, the Ministry will be exploring the construction of several types of houses, including modular/prefabricated designs. These approaches are expected to provide durability while improving productivity and ensuring the efficient delivery of homes nationwide.
