Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon says that Cabinet finds it odd that GECOM’s CEO, Gocool Boodhoo was removed from the Commission because of his flawed calculations at the 2011 general elections.

At his post cabinet media briefing today, Dr. Luncheon said it was the very GECOM who was prepared to disenfranchise over 7,000 Guyanese voters at the last election.

“Yet it was incontrovertible that the same Commission was prepared to disenfranchise over 7,000 Guyanese voters…in its abortive attempt to close claims and objections. You might recall the strenuous objections made to overtake, overcome Chairman [Steve] Surjubally’s intention to close claims and objections that led to the extension during which 7,000 additional Guyanese voters were enfranchise,” Dr. Luncheon said.

He questioned, “Should the commission have resigned? Should the Secretariat been sacked or removed?”

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) on Tuesday July 16 voted against the renewal of the contract for Gocool Boodoo, who was the Chief Elections Officer (CEO).

Recently, Boodoo tried to block the commission from deciding his fate, but the case was eventually thrown out by Chief Justice Ian Chang.

Boodhoo is accused of using the wrong formula to calculate the 2006 and 2011 elections to give the Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) an edge.
