Housing Minister, Collin Croal and Vice-Chairman of Region One, Paul Pierre, recently met with residents of Barimanobo, Mabaruma, Region One (Barima-Waini), to discuss ongoing and planned development initiatives.
During the engagement, Croal underscored that, now more than ever, significant resources are being invested across communities nationwide to advance infrastructure, healthcare, education, water services, and other critical sectors through heavy government investment.
“The Government remains committed to ensuring that every community benefits from sustained investments that enhance the quality of life for residents,” said the Minister.
He noted that over the past four years, approximately $64 million has been injected into Barimanobo through a combination of Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) Grants, Presidential Grants, and other targeted development initiatives.

He reiterated the Government of Guyana’s commitment to ensuring residents have access to essential services, creating an enabling environment for sustainable development and the well-being of future generations.
Looking ahead, Croal stated that with the 2026 National Budget expected soon, development efforts will be intensified, with a strong focus on accelerating progress over the next five years.
“Our focus is on building resilient communities,” he stated.
The villagers were given an opportunity to raised concerns during the meeting, which were addressed by the ministerial team, including matters related to the water supply system.
Currently, residents are served through a rotational system, with the water supply divided among three sections of the community. The Guyana Water Incorporated’s (GWI) Regional Manager, Nyian Briglall, was present and engaged with residents as efforts continue to resolve their concerns.
To address issues related to water quality and supply levels, the GWI will provide residents with an updated schedule in the coming week. Additionally, GWI will work closely with the Village Council on desilting the system, while also strengthening monitoring mechanisms to improve service delivery.
In the longer term, the Minister outlined plans by GWI to implement a desalination system in the Mabaruma area that will intake water from a freshwater source, treat it, and distribute it to households.
Residents were also informed of plans for a new ferry, which is expected to significantly enhance transportation, improve the movement of goods, and support economic activity in Region One.
Deputy Mayor of Mabaruma, Leanne Persaud, and Regional Education Officer, Annansha Peters were also in attendance.
