Gold miner charged for ganja possession

A Bartica gold miner was on Friday arraigned on a cannabis possession charge when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Richard Simon, 27, of Lot 111-4th Avenue, Bartica, Region 7 (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), denied the charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.

The court heard that on August 9, 2018 while at the Bartica Police Station he had in his possession 61.2 grams of cannabis.

The prosecution is contending that on the day in question after a search was carried out on his person the illegal substance was found and he admitted to the offense and told officers that he uses it for medical purposes.

Police Prosecutor Vivian Adolph objected to bail being granted and told the court that the father of two was previously arraigned on another charge of a similar nature.

Defense attorney Adrian Thompson in a bail application told the court that his client has no knowledge of any other matters previous or pending before the court.

The miner was released on $100,000 mail by Magistrate McLennan, who ordered the man to report to the Bartica Police Station every Friday until completion of the matter.

The case will continue on August 30.
