Former GWI Employee sentenced to 60 months for road death

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Former driver, attached to the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) was sentenced to 60 months imprisonment by Magistrate Judy Latchman for the offence of causing death by dangerous driving.

Shawn Ravindra Ramai of Lot 15 Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown, was found guilty on Monday, April 20 following a trial. The Court heard that on February 26, 2014, he drove motor pick up PRR 292 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Claude McPherson.

The other three charges against him stated that on the same day, having been involved in an accident, failed to render assistance, failing to stop the said vehicle after the accident, and failing to report the said accident within 24 hrs of its occurrence.

He was fined $30,000 with an alternative of one month imprisonment for each of the three charges. Ramai made his first court appearance before City Magistrate Latchman on March 6, 2014, and was granted bail after denying the charges.

The matter was prosecuted by Police Inspector Vishnu, while Attorney Fazil Azeez represented the defendant.

Subsequent to the sentencing, Ramai’s lawyer gave oral notice of an appeal in the matter. He further requested bail for his client, which was opposed by the prosecution and denied by Magistrate Latchman.

  1. 60 months for this killa..in no time he will be out to kill again..those who sells drivers license are part of the killing field too but hey they are untouchables..the filthy rich..imagine 60,000.00 for a killa license..do they care? oh heck no..u gat the money come get your killa license..
