Five remanded to prison for murder of Enmore Businessman

kid 3 copy[www.inewsguyana.com] – Five men were charged today (Thursday, April 17) with the murder of Enmore businessman, Rajendra Singh. The men appeared before magistrate Ann Mc Lennon at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and were not required to plead to the indictable offence of murder.

Adony James, 31 years, of Roxanne Burnham Gardens, Georgetown; Sheldon Chase, 28 years of Pike Street, Kitty; Doonauth Ketwaroo called ‘Pumpkin’, 27 years, of Good Hope, ECD; Tony Thomas, 27 years, of Bel Air, Georgetown and Michael Lewis called ‘Jet Lee’, 37 years, of Sheriff Street, Georgetown were all charged.

They were remanded to prison until May 21, 2014.

The Court heard that between April 5 – 9 at Le Repentir Cemetery, they murdered Rajendra Singh. The prosecution is expected to call some 31 witnesses at the Preliminary Inquiry.

Three of the five accused through their lawyers told the Court they were beaten and tortured by the police into signing their confession statements at the police station. The Court was told that the beating reportedly took place at the Sparendaam and Cove and John Police Stations.

Singh, a spare parts auto dealer was kidnapped by two gunmen on April 05 at his Foulis, East Coast Demerara business place. His car was found abandoned in Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara by his wife.

The kidnappers had initially demanded $50M from the family, but reduced it to $25M. The ransom was never paid and Singh was found dead on April 09 with a gunshot wound to his head in the Le Repentir Cemetery in Georgetown.
