[www.inewsguyana.com] – With just under five more days to go, a field of 24 senior lifters from the top six gyms in the Country have registered their intentions of vying for top honors at the upcoming National Opening Powerlifting Championships on Sunday, November 9 at the St Stanislaus College Auditorium in Brickdam.

While the list is headed by last year’s male best lifter and overall Berbice Champion Vijai Rahim (Hardcore Barbell Gym), he will be challenged by yet another Berbician in the explosive Anis Ade Thomas (Elite Systems Gym).

World Masters II dead lift record holder (277.5kg) Winston Stoby (Kingsrow Gym) current Caribbean gold medalists Osmond Mack and Marino Jeffrey (Life Gym) will also be a part of the event.

The weigh-in will be from 07:30hrs on Sunday as the lifters prepare for a 10:00hrs start as they will also be vying for selection to the Caribbean Powerlifting Championships tentatively set for Georgetown Guyana in March, the Pan American Championships (Sao Paolo Brazil) in August and the Commonwealth Championships (Vancouver Canada) in December national teams.

Meanwhile Fitness Express is the official sponsor of the tournament by donating an undisclosed sum of money to the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF).

According to the GAPF, only lifters taking part in the tournament will be eligible for selection the national teams in 2015.

An entrance fee of $500 will bet the cost to enter the event in order to raise funds to help neutralize expenses for the national teams next year.
