Fire Service wants power to prosecute negligent persons

[www.inewsguyana.com]The Guyana Fire Service is calling for the Fire Service act to be amended so as to give the Fire Service the power to prosecute negligent persons responsible for the cause of many fires.

In the past, a number of children have died in separate fires with most reportedly resulting from negligence.

According to Fire Prevention Officer, Gregory Wickham the only agencies that has the authority to prosecute are the Guyana Police Force and the Ministry of Labour.

The Fire Service is currently in discussions with the Director of Public Prosecution and the Ministry of Labour to move forward with the proposed amendment.

Meanwhile fire prevention week will be observed from October 6 to October 12 under the theme “Support fire prevention and fire safety.”

Wickham noted that a number of activities such as exhibitions, marches and community outreaches have been planned, all aimed at creating more awareness of fire prevention and safety. Additionally, Courts Guyana donated half a million dollars to the Guyana Fire Service to help stage their fire prevention week activities. [Akash Ramlackhan]
