A fire of unknown origin ripped through the dwelling house of a 43-year-old man at Cogland Dam, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara (WBD) during the wee hours of Thursday morning, leaving approximately $20M in losses.

The incident occurred at Lot 124 Cogland Dam, Pouderoyen, WBD at a wooden house owned by Mahesh Parwat.

Based on reports received, the fire began at about 00:05h.

Parwat told investigators that he was asleep at the time, and awoke to the sounds of someone screaming “fire!”

As a result, the man- who resided alone- said that he ran outside and quickly realized that the front of his home was on fire.

The Fire Service was immediately contacted and arrived approximately 15 minutes after.

Neighbours were alerted and a bucket brigade commenced.

However, this proved futile since by the time the Fire Tender arrived at the scene, the house had been completely destroyed.

Investigations are ongoing.
