UPDATE: Fire destroys orphanage in Oleander Gardens

A fire, whose origin is yet to be determined, has completely destroyed an orphanage located at 7 and 8 Oleander Gardens, East Coast Demerara on Saturday.

Based on information reaching INews, that fire occurred around 06:00hrs, destroying the uninsured building which is valued at approximately $50M.

The caretaker of the facility, 59-year-old Shantie Pooram was reportedly alerted to the fire by one of the orphans who indicated to her that smoke was seen emanating from the upper flat at the north/western side of the building.

An alarm was raised and the police and fire services were summoned.

By the time the police arrived the upper flat was already engulfed in flame.

The fire service arrived subsequently after and quelled the raging inferno.

This publication was informed that on one received injuries.

An investigation is currently ongoing to determine the origin of the fire.
