Murdered: Mohamed Munir and Bibi Jamila Munir

In light of the most recent brutal attacks on Guyana citizens, particularly businesspersons, the Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) is pleading with the Government to immediately implement effective security measures to address the crime situation gripping the country at the moment.

The IAC earlier today issued a press statement condemning the most recent attack on the elderly East Bank Essequibo couple, seventy-five year-old Mohammed Munir, and his wife, sixty-nine year-old Jamila Munir, who perished after they were burnt to death by bandits who stormed their home last Sunday night.

“The IAC urges the authorities to ensure that the security of the populace is given utmost priority as promised and believes that the fear that continues to be instilled into the hearts of the citizenry can no longer be tolerated”, the statement added.

The following is the full statement:

The Indian Action Committee (IAC), like all Guyanese, is horrified at the deaths of the elderly East Bank Essequibo couple, seventy-five year-old Mohammed Munir, and his wife, sixty-nine year-old Jamila Munir, who perished after their home was allegedly set ablaze.

The IAC understands that the unsuspecting rice-farming couple was attacked by bandits just before their home was on fire. Reports suggest that the home was deliberately set ablaze by bandits.

This horrific incident is yet another example of heinous crimes that continue to be meted out to innocent Guyanese at the hands of merciless bandits. These incidents which seemingly appear unabated continue to drive fear into the hearts of Guyanese.

The IAC has also learnt that a twenty-six year-old businessman, MahendraPersaud, of Wakenaam, Essequibo, lost his life earlier today in Georgetown after being attacked and robbed by an armed bandit.

These are just the most recent incidents of attacks in a continuous spate of crimes against Guyanese.

The IAC cannot help in noticing that these attacks, some of which results in deaths, are perpetrated largely against Indo-Guyanese. In this regard, the IAC believes that it would not be unreasonable to suggest that Indo-Guyanese appear to be targeted by heartless criminals.

The IAC, in forthrightly condemning these latest incidents, calls on the authorities to immediately implement effective security measures to curb these attacks on Guyanese.

Also, the IAC urges the authorities to ensure that the security of the populace is given utmost priority as promised and believes that the fear that continues to be instilled into the hearts of the citizenry can no longer be tolerated.

The IAC, having expressed these sentiments in the past, can only hope, like all Guyanese, the counter measures would be implemented as swiftly as possible so as to cease the hemorrhaging of innocent lives.

The IAC takes this opportunity to express its deepest condolences to the immediate family and relatives of the victims and calls on civil society to join in its call.

  1. When a government cannot provide Basic Security to ordinary citizens then that administration has FAILED its people and needs to be removed.

Guyana has become a FAILED STATE!

  2. No word from the Genius Security Minister, when in opposition he had all the answers now the only thing he can do is close down bars at 2 am,Jattan Rohee looks like a Boss now and you as usual still lost in your own world.

  3. Guyana under siege, crime is rampant, the majority of the victims are Indians. They worked tirelessly for whatever they have. They live like prisoners in their own homes. When will the killings, violence and robberies against innocent hard working INDIANS come to an end? Where are those from the CIOG? Are they waiting for another photo opportunity to pose with Granger? Why haven’t they made any public statement condemning the atrocities against innocent citizens? Will a ROGER KHAN have to rise up and take control?. According to GECOM, assuming that the local election elections were free and fair, the GT people voted for APNU/AFC so the government cannot take action against them. GT is now the most dangerous place in Guyana. Criminals are preparing for the influx of Guyanese returning for the 50th celebration. I wont.

  4. Note the subtle imputation that blacks are targeting Indians. These are the type of mind games that are used to rally the forces against the coalition. No one saw the criminals who burnt down the home of the elderly couple so no one knows their ethnicity. No one described the ethnicity of the gunman nor the public spirited licensed firearm owner who engaged the gunman forcing him to flee, but there is the subtle imputation that Indians are being targeted by blacks under the coalition government. The unfortunate thing is that this type of tactic gains traction with total disregard for the fact that there is also ‘indian on indian’ crime in Guyana. Having said that, I wish to call on the government to spare no effort to bring criminal scum of all ethnicities to justice and consign them to the holiday resort at Camp and Durban Streets. They may also wish to review their recently implemented strategy of bowing down before detained criminals who know how to play the ‘victim’ card to earn sympathy.
My great grandfather was a prison warder and he told my father that the cat-o-nine tails broke the most hardened criminals because no human being could bear that amount of pain. Those who will tell you that you cannot do that, tolerated widespread murder and torture by ‘friendly’ regimes in Latin America and Iran for long years. They also blinked when the Italian Army committed genocide in Ethiopia during the 1930s. Their crowning achievement was making pot roast of the ordinary residents of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. My point is, that you cannot allow foreigners to dictate to you that you have to treat criminals like gentlemen while their own police are murdering unarmed blacks in the streets.
The president needs to take a stand and reintroduce the ‘cat’. It will be an effective deterrent.

  5. ‘FEAR CAN NO LONGER BE TOLERATED’…IAC urges Govt to address security concerns of citizens urgently.
Like you folks did not hear the installed president said the people are angry and this is why they acting out.
Did he not say that after his PNC was declared winner of election when his PNC thugs went on a rampage beating East Indian people?
Instead of calling on PNC to do something why not rile the Guyanese masses in demanding that every adult Guyanese receives weapon training?
You people of all people should know beating robbing raping killing East Indians is favorite past time for PNC supporters.
PNC ruled for 28 year and East Indians suffered brutal attacks.
PPP ruled for 23 years and East Indians suffered brutal attacks.
This installed coalition not even one year yet and East Indians are suffering brutal attacks.
Let me ask you people this:
If twenty citizens in a street of lets say forty citizens are equipped with high power weaponry and are highly trained in high power weapon use do you think bandits / murderers / terrorists coming in that street to rob anyone?
History proved no political party can stop this kind of butchery of East Indians in Guyana so this is what you must be vocal for.
Let me ask you people other questions.
Are you people blind deaf and down right dumb to not see these butchery does not take place in black neighborhoods in Guyana?
Why this does not happen in black neighborhoods is simple- they have guns -illegal and all and they look out for each other- they protect each other.
Bet your life on it Ramjhaat cant go get their guns but will go into any Indian village and demand their guns..

  6. It is a ruthless, heartless ,frustrating situation……but to hold up indo-Guyanese as being targeted because of their race is a difficult and obnoxious ”stretch” . The entire Nation is being victimized and demoralized at this time.
On second thoughts, maybe it was a wise move by Granger to allow Ramjattan, the COPand the DPP to remain in their respective positions.

  7. This message will fall on def ears. This Defacto administration has no clue on how to solution the current crime spree targeting Indo-Guyanese. One by one innocent Guyanese lives will be taken out by these heartless criminals. It’s indeed a shame on this administration who preached so much about security while they were on the campaign trail. It is almost one years since they are in office but still can’t deliver.
