Emergency repairs begin on Demerara Harbour Bridge

Emergency repairs have begun on the Demerara Harbour Bridge, following an early morning accident which resulted in the closure of the bridge to all traffic until further notice.

The bridge is the main thoroughfare connecting the West Bank of Demerara with the East Bank.

The accident has inconvenienced hundreds of persons, especially today – on the first day back to school.

There was chaos the Vreed-en-Hoop Stelling, as many commuters  crowded the facility in hopes of making it to work and school.

The speedboat service started earlier than usual to cater for the heavy traffic.

Minister of Public Infrastructure David Patterson is currently on site assessing the situation at the bridge and is exploring alternatives to bring relief to affected persosns.
