Duke Lodge Bartender admits to stealing $17,000; Magistrate institutes $50,000 fine

[www.inewsguyana.com]Bartender attached to Duke Lodge, Danpaul Dhanraj is accused of stealing from the Company. The 35 – year – old man pleaded guilty to the charge before Magistrate Judy Latchman.

The particulars of the case state that on October 20 at Kingston, Georgetown he being employed at Roraima Airways Incorporated as a servant, stole $17,289.

Police prosecutor Vishnu Hunt told the court that the accused was tasked with the responsibility of taking orders from customers, issuing bills and collecting money from orders made.

However, on October 20 the accused was scheduled to work from 15:00h – 23:00h and during this shift he collected the sum of $24,214 from a customer for food and drinks, but at the end of his shift he only handed over $5,127 for that order and also provided a forged bill to reflect that he indeed collected $5,127.

Attorney – at – law Paul Fung – A – Fat represented the accused and related that his client was in police custody for three days.  As such, the lawyer asked for the accused not to be incarcerated since this is his first offence.

Without much deliberation, the Magistrate fined Dhanraj $50,000 or an alternative of six months in jail. [Royan Abrams]
