[www.inewsguyana.com] – Reports from Mahdia indicate that some eleven persons are reportedly dead after a mining pit caved in at Konawaruk Backdam.
According to information reaching iNews the incident took place just about noon on Sunday, May 17.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that some 17 miners were trapped in the pit. iNews understands that seven of the miners were rescued and transported to the Mahdia Hospital. Reports reaching this online news entity revealed that the men were working on two dredges when the pit caved in during the heaving rains.
Police investigators have been dispatched to the area but because of poor telephone signal the ranks are unable to make contact with their senior officers.
The miners were hauled out of the pit and transported to Mousie Landing before being taken to the Mahdia Hospital. [Leroy Smith]
