A release from the Ministry stated that the Minister will be hosting a press conference to announce the date which is expected to be in March or April 2016.
The elections were last held in Guyana in 1994 and in recent years several protests have been mounted and calls made for the previous administration to set a date for the elections.
The new APNU+AFC government made a major campaign promise of restoring power to local democratic institutions through local government polls.
The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) on November 09 commenced the Claims and Objections exercise for the holding of Local Government Elections (LGE) scheduled for early 2016.
The claims and objections exercise is a mandatory process leading up to the production of a Register of Voters for LGE.
GECOM Chairman, Dr Steve Surjubally at a press conference on November 12 revealed that thus far there have been some 558 applications for new registrants, 103 applications for transfers and 8 applications for entries onto the Preliminary List of Voters.
