Covid: 1836 active cases, death toll now 299

The Health Ministry on Sunday stated that another person who was tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has died, thus bringing the total deaths to a whopping 299. This is the second death that has been reported for the month of May.

The latest fatality is a 75-year-old female from Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) who died on May 1 while receiving care at a medical facility.

On Friday, two females: a 71-year-old from Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) and a 73-year-old from Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) also succumbed. A 57-year-old female from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) died on Thursday.

However, Guyana’s active COVID-19 cases now stand at 1836, after 114 new positives were detected in one day.

New statistics revealed by the Ministry on Sunday revealed that the overall positive cases have risen to 13,518 – 6785 males and 6733 females.

Some 14 patients remain in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while 95 are in institutional isolation, 1727 are in home isolation and 15 in institutional quarantine. The country has seen 11,383 recoveries.

Of the new positives, four were detected in Region One (Barima-Waini); one from Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam); 26 in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara); 38 in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica); 14 in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice); one in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), 14 in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), one in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) and 15 in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).

The total cases in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) remained at 542 after there were no increases.
