Cordell Stanley initially pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on Sunday, August 31 at Kwakwani Park, Upper Berbice River, he stole from Beverley Captain one HTC cellular phone valued $100,000.

He told the Court that the Virtual Complainant (VC) recovered her cellular phone and it was a misunderstanding. He explained that he was working for someone and when he went for his payment they cursed him and refused to pay him.

The defendant said he went to Kwakwani Park and consumed alcohol after which he saw the woman with her husband at the shop. He said that he saw the phone on a counter and picked it up which led the couple to give chase behind him.

Based on the explanation, a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf.

Police Prosecutor Michael Grant successfully opposed bail by citing the nature and gravity of the charge.

The unrepresented man was remanded to prison until September 8 where he will make an appearance before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
