Canada wants Guyana’s election process to be a “catalyst for constructive debate”

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana , Dr Nicole Giles says the Canadian government expects a clean elections campaign as the date for General and Regional Elections draws closer.

Giles, speaking at a special reception on Thursday March 19 to honour the recipients of grants from the Canadian government, reaffirmed that Canada has a firm belief in the Guyana Elections Commission’s (GECOM) ability to deliver free and fair elections.

“Canada is hopeful that the upcoming elections process will be a catalyst for constructive debate to address the issues that are facing Guyana,” Dr Giles said.

She reiterated her country’s commitment to working with all stakeholders to ensure that the elections are held in accordance with the law. She noted too that GECOM would be benefitting from grants from the Canadian government in the form of 100 laptops.

Other recipients of grants for included Help and Shelter, Home Affairs Ministry and the Guyana Women Miners Association.

“Support to Help and Shelter and Guyana Women Miners Association is geared toward building capacity to improve the socioeconomic conditions and promote the protection of the rights of women, children and youth and other vulnerable groups,” the High Commissioner noted.

The winners were selected based upon the proposed contributions of their projects to shared priorities areas: advancing democracy, preventing sexual violence, strengthening economic governance (including building free markets and an effective enabling environment for business), and strengthening security institutions.
