[www.inewsguyana.com]Leader of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) David Granger is of the view that Police Commissioner (ag) Leroy Brumell is the most qualified person to be confirmed as Head of the Police Force.

The APNU and President Ramotar agreed to confirm Brumell as the Police Commissioner, following a meeting at the Office of the President on Thursday October 3.

At a press conference on Friday, October 4, the APNU Leader told reporters, “Mr. Brumell is the most senior person for that post, he is the better qualified person and he was already acting in that post. My view was that confirming him in that position was better than not confirming him, since there was nobody else available for the appointment to that position.”

According to Granger, with Brumell being confirmed, it will send a message to the subordinates within the Guyana Police Force.

“It will also give him the confidence to improve the quality of performance the entire Police Force. I was concerned with the institutional integrity of the Guyana Police Force and I felt that having a person at that level acting for so long would be damaging to the moral of the Guyana Police Force,” Granger told reporters.

When asked if he is satisfied with Brumell’s performance, the APNU Leader said that he is dissatisfied with the performance of the entire Police Force. However, Granger said he is cognizant that the Force has been limited by the quality of policy direction it receives from the Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee.

APNU Member and Former Police Commissioner, Winston Felix just over a week ago demanded that President Ramotar confirm Brumell as Police Commissioner.

The government in response had said that it was the Opposition’s failure to meet, which was stalling the appointment. Brumell has been acting in the capacity for almost two years, following the death of the then Police Commissioner, Henry Greene.
